full form of PQRST

P= Preview

Here p stands for preview

Q= Questions

Q stands for Question

R =Reading and React

R stands for Reading and React

S=Self-recitation or Summary

S stands for Self-recitation or Summary

T= Test

And the last T stands for Test

So what can This Method do?

This method has been shown to improve a reader’s understanding and ability to recall information. And we can say that the reader is more likely to know and learn more about the material they are reading. If you use this method, reading will not waste your time.

How to use the PQRST Method When Studying?

To use this method, we will follow five steps:

  1. Preview
  2. Questions
  3. Read and react
  4. Self-recite and summary, and
  5. Testing

In all this PQRST Methods’s steps. The middle three steps will be applied to each section of a chapter while the first and the last steps will be applied to the chapter itself. You may find that many textbooks are compiled in a way that makes this method easier to implement, using an introductory passage, and finally the question.

1.Preview

When you start reading your notes, or a new textbook, or anything then, The first thing you should do is preview the information. And that is the first step of the PQRST method, Then After all, What is that previewing?

What is that previewing?

Previewing is when you lightly skim through the content, making sure to pay attention to chapter titles, headings, subheadings, any capital letters or bold letters. So that you can know what you are going to cover.

One way to do this is to read the chapter introduction with the title and objectives of the chapter, look at headings and subheadings, read the section introduction, and see figures such as graphs, pictures, text boxes. Then read the summary of the chapter which is given at the end of the chapter. Then read chapter questions so that when you get thought out the whole reading. You will get attention to that part where will be answer of this question

2.Question

Creating questions based on what you have read is a very powerful tool that students do not actually use while studying. I always use it and it is very efficient. It helps to make more connections in your brain.

so now, you read through each section, begin by asking yourself “what should I learn in this section”. This helps your brain to keep pace with the topic being discussed.

Ask other questions such as:

  1. What do I need to know from this assignment?”
  2. How this chapter Help Me?
  3. What will I learn from this chapter?
  4. What’s the purpose of this reading? •
  5. How will this information be used in my course? •
  6. Create separate questions for each title, heading, or subheadings of each chapter.

If Possible, Write down your questions on a fresh sheet of paper.

And now you have formulated questions, so your mind will be ready and sharp enough to grab the information that answers the questions. Next, you have to move on to the next step in the PQRST method.

That is read and React.

3.READ and REACT

Now, in this step, you can actually read that section. Do this carefully, think about meaning, and relate it to other things you know about this and similar topics.

Be an active reader — think and question while reading and Highlight or mark only the main ideas or keywords in the book or on sticky notes to draw your attention to specific ideas.

Only 10% of the text should be highlighted.

You have already reviewed the chapter, so you know what the important parts are. if you want to take notes, read the whole section first, and then summarise it later.

4.Self Recitation and Summary

Self-recitation-

Do self-recitation in Each section of the reading.

Once you have finished reading part of the chapter, think back about what the main ideas you learned were. Try to recite some of this information out loud (unless you are in the office or library). Check back in front of the lesson, and note the things you missed. Make sure you did not miss anythings Only then go on to the next section and Question again and recite the learned Information.

After completion of all the sections of reading. make a note or summary. before that, you should know that

What is a summary?

A summary is a personal way to conclude everything you have read. A summary is prepared by writing down the things you remember. You can also use mind maps and diagrams to help you articulate your thoughts. When you are summarizing the chapter you have read, you do not really need to memorize it word by word. Just use your own words and language.

If you can not remember things you can go back and read things again. then Try again to remember to see if you can remember things without looking.

Summaries can include powerful single words that help you in remembering concepts better.

A summary can include jokes, mnemonics, tricks and anything that helps you remember things easily.

During Self Recitation and summaries, You can Use memory Science technique like Major System Code, Phonetic code system, shape methods, Rhyming Methods, PNN Methods, and all other Mnemonic methods

Which I have already taught on the youtube channel Memory GK Tricks. So go and watch those videos.

5.Test.

So now, you have finished reading the chapter (or a major section of the chapter if there are large separate sections in the chapter), now is the time to test yourself and review all the material. You should test yourself more, especially in your speed and ease of time. This will help you to be less nervous during the actual exam or test.

Answer the test questions you developed.

Memory doesn’t happen by review only;

Retrieval of information requires the practice of recalling.

In the test phase of the PQRST method, you have to get the sheet of your question paper that contains your questions and start answering them. Now you will have previewed, created questions, read and summarized all the information you need. This means that you will be able to answer the questions formulated easily.

This is a step that you should never skip because it just seems like a waste of time. But it is the most Important which helps in memory Enhancement and remembering and testing of all things which you have learned

Once again, testing helps our brain strengthen more connections within our brain, and when more connections will form, it will be easier to remember information.

These are the steps that you have to follow in order to use the PQRST method for studying. You can make this your study method from now on, and see how your grades get better and better.

Researchers have tested this method and found that it actually works. Self-recitation and summaries are particularly effective if done properly, as in the questioning phase. Ultimately, it makes sense because it is putting your brain into gear and warming it up before you start. And it helps in making more connections between neurons of the brain.

So this PQRST is the most powerful method to use for study. So you must use this method.

If you like this article then must hit like and comment your opinion about this Method.
